This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
