The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
