At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
